Health & Safety Specialist

Description


The Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Specialist is dedicated to protecting Noojmowin Teg Health Centre staff, clients, and visitors by identifying, evaluating, and mitigating workplace hazards. This role focuses on unique risks like infectious diseases, musculoskeletal injuries from fitness and manual labour, and ergonomic strain.

Key Responsibilities
· Inspections & Audits: Conducting on-site audits and inspections of all Noojmowin Teg Health Centre locations, equipment, and work practices to identify hazards.
· Compliance & Regulatory Enforcement: Ensuring adherence to government standards (e.g., Ontario’s Occupational Health and Safety Act) and internal company policies.
· Program Development: Designing, implementing, and updating safety programs, policies, and standard operating procedures (SOPs).
· Incident Investigation: Leading investigations of accidents, injuries, or hazardous conditions and recommending corrective actions.
· Training and Education: Providing training to staff on safety procedures, emergency protocols, and the use of protective equipment.

Key Responsibilities in Healthcare
· Hazard Prevention: Designing and launching initiatives to control hazards common in healthcare settings.
· Safe Operating & Ergonomics: Identifying musculoskeletal hazards and implementing interventions, such as safe manual material handling practices, to reduce worker injuries.
· Compliance & Auditing: Ensuring NTHC adheres to provincial and federal regulations, such as the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA).
· Incident Management: Investigating workplace accidents to determine root causes and implement corrective actions.
· Training & Education: Developing safety orientation for new hires and delivering training on relevant issues pertaining to employee’s roles.

Qualifications and Requirements
· Education: A diploma or degree in Occupational Health and Safety or related field.
· Experience: 3–5 years of experience in occupational health.
· Skills: Strong knowledge of health and safety legislation, communication, and risk management.
